Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula, with an area of approximately 505,990 km², making it the second-largest country in Western Europe after France.

Its population is around 49 million (2025), and its capital is Madrid, which serves as the political, economic, and cultural center. The official language is Spanish (Castilian), alongside recognized regional languages such as Catalan, Basque, and Galician.

Spain has a long and complex history; it was home to Iberian, Roman, and Visigothic civilizations. It later became the center of Islamic rule in Al-Andalus between the 8th and 15th centuries, leaving a prominent architectural and cultural legacy like the Alhambra Palace in Granada and the Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba.

In 1492, the Christian Reconquista was completed with the fall of Granada, beginning Spain's Golden Age as a global empire spanning the Americas and Asia. Today, Spain is a parliamentary democracy and a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area.

Its economy is one of the largest in Europe, based on tourism, industry, agriculture, and financial services. It is the third most visited country in the world, attracting over 80 million tourists annually thanks to its beaches, historic cities, and cultural festivals.
